Location Profile

Maputo Province

Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique, is located in the southern part of the country along the coastline of the Indian Ocean bordering the Republic of South Africa and Swaziland. The population of approximately 806,000 is made up primarily of five people groups: the Ronga, Changana, Chopi, Bitonga and Matswa. The most commonly spoken language among the people of Maputo is Portuguese, Ronga and Changana.

While the Gospel has been proclaimed in this region for many years, receptivity is very low. Many people groups are dominated by traditional African tribal beliefs, which present a major challenge to the evangelical community. The most prominent religious groups in this area are Catholic, Orthodox, Zion (an African traditional religion) and Protestant.

The majority of the workforce is involved in agriculture, fishing and public service. The most common methods of transportation are buses, combis (mini buses/vans), cars and taxis. The regional diet consists of rice, maize, meat, fish and vegetables. While poverty in this area of the third world is prevalent, malaria and cholera also pose a significant threat to public health.

Prayer requests for reaching this area for Jesus Christ are:

  • Openness and receptivity of the people to the Gospel
  • Boldness of Christians for witnessing
  • Interest of pastors and church leaders in the Evangelism Explosion ministry
